Nonspace Exhibit

Los Angeles, CA | 2018

This Alexander Calder exhibit featured a selection of the artist’s monochromatic, abstract sculptures. Our lighting design approach integrated daylight with electric light to create a diffuse, shadowless environment that simplified the gallery’s architecture and supported viewing of the sculptures’ delicate geometry. Working closely with the exhibition designer, Stephanie Goto, we developed a cost-effective illuminated scrim ceiling that covered up existing architectural detail and skylights. Lighting design criteria played a critical role in the selection of the scrim material, which had to integrate with the existing complex ceiling structure while providing an even plane of light.
