Radiant Echo

Chestertown, MD | 2019

This light sculpture in the McLain Atrium at Washington College commemorates the achievements of Joseph H. McLain, a former president of the college who specialized in the chemistry of pyrotechnics. Research on topics related to pyrotechnics led us to a design concept that evokes the power and enigma of fireworks while illustrating principles of physics, chemistry, psychology, software programming, astronomy, and art. 286 reflective orbs and 3,640 programmable LED lights display a series of dynamic sequences, each of which transforms the atrium in a unique way. The sculpture’s position in the architecture encourages observers to experience it from multiple interior vantage points as well as from outside, where the atrium takes on a new night identity for observers on the adjacent lawn. To stay within a tight budget and ensure material and operational efficiency, the artwork was fully conceived and detailed by our lighting design team.
