This exhibit represents the first comprehensive renovation to the multi-story Great Hall of the National Aquarium since the building opened in 1981. Designed by Cambridge 7 Associates, the exhibit features a large shallow habitat filled with sharks, stingrays, and multicolored coral typical of Indo-Pacific reefs. Our lighting design process included extensive research into the particular species whose habitats we were lighting. To create a dramatic setting above and below the water’s surface, highly focused HID framing projectors mounted at various locations around the five-story interior volume provide even light distribution on the tank while limiting direct light from adjacent visitor walkways. Aquarium visitors experience the exhibit from many different vantage points before arriving at an underwater viewing area. Here, slowly changing blue light reduces veiling reflections in the glass and supports the dynamic scene in the tank beyond.
