Philadelphia, PA | 2017
This student center renovation aimed to modernize the existing building, engage the adjacent quad, and strengthen the connection between the university and its surrounding Philadelphia neighborhood. Our lighting design approach supported the renovation with integrated electric and daylighting strategies that optimize energy use and enhance the building’s sense of permeability. We provided daylighting consultation for the terracotta façade screen, which limits glare and prevents excess solar heat gain during the day while giving the building a glowing, lantern-like identity at night. In the interior spaces, we coordinated electric lighting equipment with the architecture, providing custom installation details for the wood and metal ceiling systems. The linear lighting motif in the open study areas recalls the horizontal terracotta façade elements, reinforcing the architectural intent.
