National Museum of Women in the Arts

Washington, DC | 2024

Originally built as a Masonic temple in 1908, this historic museum showcases work by women artists and hosts a range of public and private events. Our lighting design approach integrates lighting equipment with the building’s historic fabric, provides flexible lighting in the galleries, and reestablishes the building’s night identity. To address cost concerns without compromising design integrity, we developed a tiered lighting approach for the façade lighting that allowed for modifications based on changes to the project budget. We closely studied our lighting strategy for the Great Hall, integrating fixtures with the historic ceiling to highlight the balustrade while also providing ambient light to support circulation and events.
