This renovation and expansion of the Korean War Veterans’ Memorial includes a new Wall of Remembrance that displays the names of the more than 36,000 U.S. casualties of the war. Our lighting design approach supports the architectural intent of a quiet and contemplative exterior environment while ensuring adequate circulation lighting. Upgrades to the existing lighting included replacing the fiber-optic lighting system that illuminated the statues in the Field of Service with LEDs and new in-grade LED uplights at the existing Mural Wall. Lighting mock-ups were key to determining the fixture positioning and orientation for the new Wall of Remembrance. These led us to a system of rail-integrated LEDs with different orientations that alternately illuminate the list of names and the path beside the wall. Our work on this project also included developing a control system and establishing the memorial’s night identity.
