This memorial on the William & Mary college campus honors the enslaved people who built and ran the school. Located on the site of a wall that previously divided the campus from the surrounding community, the memorial challenges this former barrier with a structure that recalls a hearth—a place of gathering and inclusion. Our lighting design approach reinforces this architectural intent and enhances the memorial's night identity. Recessed in-grade wall-washers around the memorial’s perimeter illuminate the names engraved on the granite blocks and accentuate the brick and granite patterning, reminiscent of cloth and art designs from western Africa. These fixtures also highlight the arched entryways, drawing visitors into the memorial from both inside and outside the campus. Within the brick structure, custom-mounted wall-grazers illuminate the spine walls while linear in-grade uplights encircle the vessel, emphasizing the center of the hearth. Our work on this project also included development of a control strategy that would allow the different features of the lighting to be dimmed separately.
