Henderson Hopkins School

Baltimore, MD | 2013

This school and community space was envisioned to play a key role in transforming Baltimore’s East Side community. Our lighting design scope included daylighting design as well as interior, exterior, and site lighting, with the primary goal being to develop an integrated electric and daylighting system to meet the Baltimore Green Building Code requirements for new construction. Our approach focused on adhering to tight budget restrictions and strict security and energy use requirements while supporting the architectural intent to promote learning and engage the surrounding community. We also sought to establish a night identity for the school that would appear welcoming after dark without excessive lighting. The daylight performance of the final design exceeds LEED requirements for schools, with 97% daylit classrooms and 96% daylit area in other regularly occupied spaces. The lighting power density is 28% more energy efficient than the ASHRAE 90.1-2007 baseline model.
